Our Origin Story

Born From a Community That Refused to Look Away

In 2019, alumni June Morris drove past the Coral Gables Senior High campus and was stunned by what she saw. Peeling paint, mold, weeds growing up the sides of buildings, wires hanging from ceilings. She documented everything on video — and it sparked an immediate community response.

Over 40 people showed up to the first meeting, including then-mayor Raúl Valdés-Fauli. That night, Friends of Gables High was born. Composed of alumni, parents, and community members, we have been fighting for Gables students ever since.

What We’ve Built Together

Every Dollar Stays at Gables

Campus Renovation

FOGH helped push the campus renovation budget from $11.2M to $48M — funding a new cafeteria, windows, roofs, bathrooms, security cameras, lighting, fresh paint, fencing, and artificial turf for the football and soccer fields.

Staff Lounge & Courtyard

From our own fundraising, we renovated the faculty staff lounge and built a beautiful senior courtyard — creating spaces that reflect the pride our community has in Gables High.

Beach Volleyball Courts

Gables became the first public school in Miami-Dade County to have on-campus beach volleyball courts — and the Lady Cavs played their first home game in March 2024.

Classroom Grants

Our grant program fills the gap between MDCPS resources and what teachers and students actually need — funding classroom supplies, equipment, and programs that make a direct difference.

Hall of Fame

We brought back the Gables Hall of Fame, inducting two classes with 17 outstanding alumni — honoring Cavaliers who excelled in medicine, law, military service, athletics, and beyond.

Media Center Renovation

Our next focus: renovating the Media Center to give Gables students a modern, comfortable space to study, collaborate, and take exams — a hub worthy of the school’s academic excellence.

Looking Ahead

The 75th Anniversary & Beyond

With Coral Gables Senior High approaching its 75th anniversary in October 2025, Friends of Gables High is ramping up efforts to complete the remaining campus upgrades. Most renovations are expected to be finished in time to showcase the newly transformed school to the public.

The one remaining major project — a full gymnasium renovation — is next on our list, and we need your help to get it done.

Friends of Gables High is entirely volunteer-run. What started as a meeting of 40 concerned citizens has grown into a thriving nonprofit with committees, events, grant programs, and a Hall of Fame — all dedicated to making Gables the best public high school in South Florida.
